TEHRAN -- Iranian director Maryam Motaref staged the first of a series of performances of Jean-Paul Sartre’s “The Condemned of Altona” at the Chaharsu Hall of Tehran’s City Theater Complex on Friday.

“A long time ago, I planned to stage the play for the centenary of Sartre last year, but, unfortunately, the dream only came true after a one-year delay due to a large number of problems,” Motaref said on Saturday.

The play is a character analysis of Franz, the skeleton in the closet of a prosperous shipbuilding dynasty family, from Sartre's five-act drama examining the moral conscience of modern post-war Germany.

Motaref has shortened the play, which stars Behnaz Jafari, Mikaiil Shahrestani, Maryam Kazemi, Masud Mirtaheri, and Esmaeil Bakhtiari.

Naseh Kamkari is the stage designer and Sirus Hemmati is the assistant director.
